History
Following Jean-Michel Canet's death, four of his friends promised to take over his archives and continue his work.
On August 12, 2006 at 6 p.m. in Villelongue de la Salanque, the official birth of the non-profit Association J.M. Canet took place, governed by the law of July 1, 1901.
The eight founding members Elie Canet, the father, the two sisters Chantal and Brigitte Canet, Christian Roques, Armel Costa, Gérard Mérou, Jo Respaut, Henri Sicart set up a Board and appointed H. Sicart as President, Elie Canet as Vice-President (replaced in 2008 after his death by Roland Le Morvan), J. Respaut as Secretary-Treasurer and created a temporary archive at Jo Respaut's home in Bages.
August 28, 2006, date and declaration of the Association J.M.Canet at the P.O. prefecture in Perpignan.
September 23, 2006, date of publication of the creation of the Association J.M. Canet in the J.O. under number 852 - Page 4528.
September 2007, transfer of the Association de Bages archives to the third floor of the Ludovic Massé media library in Céret, 2, Rue du Commerce, where collection, archiving and digitization work continues.
In January 2008, a new name was given to the Association, to be known as the “Académie J.M.Canet - Association Rugby Catalan”. The Academy's path is a gradual one. The aim is to make “L'Espace Rugby” at the Médiathèque cérétane a conservatory for Catalan rugby, and the first recognized regional center for documentation, consultation and research, available to clubs, town halls, schools, colleges, students, etc.
After six years in operation, the third floor of Céret's Médiathèque is becoming increasingly cramped due to the growing volume of archives.
The Academy was offered the opportunity to make available a room and an archive deposit agreement on the premises of the Perpignan municipal archives, whose archiving practices are adapted to the technical referential requirements of the National Archives' public administration regulations.
On April 3, 2013, it moves the paper archives from Céret to Perpignan; on April 4, 2013, from Bages to Perpignan, at 1 rue du Musée.
2013 is a year of transferring and setting up the Céret paper archives from Bages to Perpignan. The digitized archives will follow later.
2014-2015 were years of change in the development strategy of the A.J.M. Canet.
- Change in the acronym: The academy becomes “Conservatoire des Mémoires du Rugby Catalan - Académie J.M. Canet.” This trademark was registered in September 2014 with the IN.P.l. (Institut National de la Propriété Intellectuelle), a trademark of which the Academy is the exclusive owner.
- Mutation in the organization with the implementation of ten geographical sectors covering CatalunyaNord (See Chapter 5 - Organigramm), eight of which are operational.
- In 2016, the team that had been in place for ten years felt it was time to hand over the reins, while ensuring the continuity of this great adventure, which began in 2006. To this end, contact was made on May 13, 2015 with R. Rebujent, Y. Tariscon,B. Soteras. The handover, in 2016, is taking place in perfect collaboration between the old team and the new one, with the aim of developing communication, in order to make the C.M.R.C.-A.J.M.C. better known, bringing together the archives of both XV and XIII rugby.
At the end of August 2016, the Conservatoire's paper and digitized rugby archives will be transferred and stored at the Caserne Mangin - 4, rue François Rabelais - 66000 Perpignan.

To raise awareness of the Conservatory as a place of Memory.
Philosophy :
- Keep the flame of Catalan rugby alive;
- publicize its history, linked to that of Catalan society from 1891 onwards;
Cultivate a duty of remembrance towards those who have gone before us and helped give Catalan rugby its letters of nobility and recognition. To know who we are, we need to know where we come from;
Cultivate the duty of remembrance so that young and old can consider rugby as a game, a mixture of “Flight Spirit” and “Fair Play” which must keep its soul and not just as a commercial product, a random consumer product;
To promote the transmission of ethics and social and human values, based on humility, non-violence and citizenship, to encourage living together, respect for the common rule of tolerance and solidarity.
To place the Association Jean Michel CANET at the heart of the memory of CATALAN RUGBY, both XV and XIII, through its history: its origins, its emblematic figures, its clubs,
To provide the widest possible information and communication to: public authorities; Conseil départemental, Direction des services départementaux de l'Education Nationale (DSDEN), local and regional authorities, educational establishments, clubs and, in particular, RUGBY SCHOOLS...
To pass on to the young the memory and human values of the men and women who have served Catalan rugby since its origins.
Since 2006, the history of Catalan rugby has been the focus of our volunteer association, which has inherited an enormous archive from JM Canet,
Our association collects, classifies, dates and identifies JM Canet's archives and those of countless donors (rugby documents, magnetic media, clicks, etc.).
This officially referenced archive, the second largest in the department, is deposited in the municipal archives of the city of Perpignan.
In 2024, the Académie (P. Aylagas) will be giving four lectures to young people (middle and high schools) on our duty to remember.
In 2024, a photographic exhibition in association with Visa pour l'Image on Catalan rugby should crown our 18 years of work.
