THE ACADEMY AT THE CENTER OF AN EVENING OF MEMORY

Remarkable and exciting! Two adjectives to best translate the conference of our academic friend, Antoine GUERRERO, a champion of remembrance and memory. It was Tuesday, October 22, 2024 in this room of the Associations of Bages, very copiously filled and particularly attentive to the stories worthy of these epics as improbable as they are moving. Because, speaking of such monstrous and devastating wars that annihilate a youth full of hope, joy of living and boundless courage, becomes a duty to better sublimate and honor it. These lives, carried to the point of sacrifice, are those of heroes who deserve more than others our admiration and our eternal recognition. Aimé GIRAL and Gilbert BRUTUS, one mown down by a shell fragment, the other tortured to death, are therefore these heroes whose memory will remain forever engraved on the pediment of the Perpignan stadiums that bear their names. Antoine GUERRERO knew, with simplicity and pedagogy, how to bring back to life these two extraordinary lives, resolutely animated by a double love for the fatherland and rugby. Beautiful conference and beautiful evening organized at the initiative of Louis BOULBET, president of the local committee of the Souvenir Français, happy to welcome a large assembly and captivated by this double story with accents of patriotism. A strong delegation from the Jean Michel Canet Academy was present in tight ranks, as if to recall that it proudly shared this double evocation and this double tribute to two servants of the two rugby, XV and XIII, whose Great History it strives, through its action, to bring to life.

IN PEZILLA, THE ACADEMY PAYS TRIBUTE TO JEAN-MICHEL CANET

Rugby is at home in Pézilla! Everything breathes it and everything brings us back to it. The "yellow and black" on the windows, to recall a recent title and the Armel Costa stadium which stands proudly at the edge of a busy road, bearing the name of a famous player, leader of a long list of illustrious teammates. In short, the Jean Michel Canet Academy (Catalan Rugby Memory Center) could not have found a more beautiful place, a more emblematic village to hold its annual general meeting, the 15th of its name. And this number is also a symbol, after the 13th which took place in Estagel… On this Saturday, June 29, gloomy outside, but so warm and bright inside, the president Yves TARISCON had gathered the members of the association in a new municipal hall, next to the stadium, the scene of many exploits. At his side were the mayor of the commune Jean Paul BILLES, Joseph RESPAUT, one of the founding members of the Academy, Jacques VILLEPONTOUX, treasurer and Louis CARLES, vice-president. The words of the mayor of Pézilla opened the session. He set the scene by congratulating himself on the national title won, 8 days earlier, by the Entente de la Têt, then evoked the memory of the elders whose life revolved around the family, of course, but also the "land" and the "oval". COMMISSIONS AND PROJECTS The screening of a film on the history of the Academy, created in 2006, was followed by the reading of the moral report by Yves TARISCON, who recalled the many activities of the Academy (from the exhibition co-organized with the association "Visa pour l'Image" from November 2025 to June 2026, to the series of conferences in preparation, under the expert direction of Pierrot AYLAGAS, including the establishment of 4 commissions with diverse and essential missions, such as communication, projects or finances). And his conclusion was on the dimension of the vocation that drives the Academy, attached to memories and memory, but resolutely turned towards the future, because "in our blood flows the love of rugby, a rugby that aims, he said, to carry values necessary for our youth, namely respect, sharing and solidarity". The memory, very present therefore throughout the morning, allowed to pay tribute to René MONIE, international quinziste and Irénée CARRERE, international thirteenists whose daughters evoked the memory with emotion, love and kindness. Treasurer Jacques VILLEPONTOUX for his part accomplished with precision the thankless task of listing the figures for the past financial year, showing a surplus of 333 euros. Financial report approved. SPOTLIGHT ON THE EXHIBITION Jean Luc SORET, on behalf of the association "Visa pour l'Image", gave an overview of the November 2025 exhibition, listing the chapters and themes that will illustrate it. A rugby historian, Francis MEIGNAN, succeeded him on the podium to present his remarkable research and compilation work (Encyclopedias, books, files). He will be a major reinforcement for the Academy. The strong words of Louis CARLES closed the work of the Assembly, words summarized as follows: "After the land, Catalanness, there is rugby, it is the only link that remains to us!". The final moment of the ordinary Assembly, the Extraordinary General Assembly to modify 2 articles of the statutes, namely the date of the AGM and the number of members of the Board of Directors increased to around thirty.

A GENERAL MEETING TO LAUNCH THE EXHIBITION

It was April 22, 2023 and this date will remain forever engraved in the history of the Conservatoire de Mémoire du Rugby Catalan and the "Académie Jean Michel Canet", named after the man who was its inspiration and "builder", through his immense archiving work. A date, a place and men for an unusual general meeting, full of memories, but also and above all resolutely turned towards the future and towards a project that will constitute the major objective of the coming months. On the site of the Departmental Memory Center, GALIENI barracks in Perpignan, the CMRC therefore held its annual work which could not find a more suitable setting for the evocation of the two heroes of the two wars who gave their names to the two stadiums of the city, namely Aimé GIRAL, who fell under German bullets during the 14-18 war and Gilbert BRUTUS, tortured to death by the Gestapo during the Second World War. Around the president Yves TARISCON, were seated the mayor of the city, Louis ALLIOT, the president of SAPS-Usap, François RIVIERE and of the Usap Association, Axel BARRIERE, as well as Yvan GRESEQUE, president of the Departmental Committee of Rugby League, also representing Bernard GUASCH, president of the Catalan Dragons, excused. This shows the importance given to this exceptional meeting which, beyond the essential activity reports and other balance sheets, particularly financial, revealed the launch of a project for an exhibition on Rugby League and Rugby Union by 2024. It is also around a real "sacred union" that the idea of such an event was born, under the impetus of the "Association Visa Pour l'Image" chaired by Renaud DONADIEU DE VABRE, an event to which the Catalan Rugby Memory Center will lend its valuable support from the 220 works and 50 linear meters of various documents that it manages at the Perpignan Municipal Archives. And it is as an extension of this ambitious project and to discuss its organization that its stakeholders met this Thursday, May 11, at the GALIENI barracks (see photos). Present for the Academy, around the president Y. TARISCON, C. GALY, J.F CAMPREDON, A. PEYRE, A. GUERERO, P. VERGES, P. IRLES, G. NAVARRO and Y. ROGE who had a long discussion with the Director of "Visa" J.L SORET and Virginie SANTIAGO. First real working session between the two parties during which several subjects were discussed and will be the subject of other meetings intended to build an event with exceptional impact.
